Your Smile After Gum Disease
Posted on 6/8/2020 by Tropic Dental
Your Smile After Gum DiseaseWhen gum disease, also called periodontal disease, starts, it does not always seem like a big deal. It occurs when a buildup of plaque and bacteria irritate your gums and cause them to become inflamed. The earliest stage, characterized by red, swollen gums that may bleed when you brush and floss, is often missed or ignored. Because of this, the condition goes untreated and continues to get worse. Swollen gums begin pulling away from the teeth, creating pockets. Bacteria collect in these pockets and begin attacking your periodontal ligaments and jawbone along with continuing to attack your gum tissue. This can lead to gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss. Treating gum disease is essential for restoring your oral health, but sometimes one treatment is not enough. Tropic Dental can help with periodontal maintenance.

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

When one gum disease treatment is not enough to help your gums begin healing, you may be recommended for periodontal maintenance. Periodontal maintenance is a series of regularly scheduled visits for examinations and cleanings to help your gums to continue healing following initial treatment, typically scaling and root planing. During periodontal maintenance exams, we take a close look at the condition of your teeth, assessing buildup, and the condition of your gums. We measure your periodontal pockets to make sure that they are becoming shallower and that the tissue is reattaching to your teeth. Digital X-rays may also be taken so that we can see the condition of your periodontal ligaments and your jawbone.

After your teeth and gums have been examined, we then clean the teeth. This involves scraping them with a scaler to remove all buildup that may have accumulated since your last visit. We can effectively remove all debris, bacteria, and plaque, as well as tartar or calcified plaque. The cleanings aid in stabilizing your gums and your teeth as well as in restoring the health of your mouth.

Benefits of Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal maintenance has many benefits.

•  It helps to slow, and stop, the progression of gum disease.
•  The irritation and inflammation of your gum tissues are eased.
•  We can effectively remove all of the most stubborn buildups from the surfaces of your teeth.
•  Treatment helps to restore and protect your oral health.
•  Periodontal maintenance helps to restore your confidence and the beauty of your smile.

Periodontal maintenance can help to restore the health of your gums, enabling them to reattach to your teeth and provide protection for the roots of your teeth once again. For more information, call Tropic Dental today at (239) 244-1555.
